The State Board of Education has approved new curriculum frameworks for foreign languages for use beginning in the 2014-2015 academic year. Five frameworks have been approved to replace the 27 frameworks currently in use. Copies of the frameworks are available at http://www.arkansased.org/divisions/learning-services/curriculum-and-instruction/frameworks/curriculum_categories/foreign-language.
A single framework for Modern Languages replaces all existing frameworks for Chinese, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. Under the new frameworks, districts may offer the following courses without approval from the Curriculum and Instruction Unit at the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE): Chinese (Mandarin) I-IV, French I-IV, German I-IV, Italian I-IV, Japanese I-IV, Russian I-IV, and Spanish I-IV.
High schools may also offer Spanish for Heritage and Native Speakers I-III and Latin I-II without approval from the Curriculum and Instruction Unit at the ADE. Elementary and middle schools will continue to use the K-8 Experiences and K-8 Acquisition frameworks.
Districts may create courses for other modern languages using the Modern Languages I-IV framework, but approval from the Curriculum and Instruction Unit at the ADE is required. This process is outlined in the Course Approval information available at http://www.arkansased.org/divisions/learning-services/curriculum-and-instruction/course-approvals.
On February 6, 2014 the ADE will host a compressed interactive video (CIV) conference to introduce and explain the new frameworks.
Presentation materials will be posted at http://www.arkansased.org/divisions/learning-services/curriculum-and-instruction by noon Tuesday, February 4. Participants are asked to either download or print the presentation materials and bring them to the session.
School staff responsible for the submission of course approvals are encouraged to attend this session in order to receive important information and updates. The session will be recorded and posted in the digital sandbox for future viewing for staff unable to attend the training February 6. To pre-register, contact the local educational service cooperative, Arkansas Public School Resource Center, or the local district if in the tri-district area.
