Memo Text

This memo has four parts regarding textbooks and instructional materials:

  • English Language Arts textbook adoption
  • Caravans and textbook samples
  • Deadline for reporting local adoptions
  • Math textbook contract extension

On December 13, 2010, the State Board of Education adopted new textbooks and other instructional materials for English Language Arts, grades K-12. These new state-adopted lists will be accessible on the Arkansas Department of Education (ADE) web page at http://www.arkansased.org/educators/instructional.html. State contracts for the materials will be effective July 1, 2011, through June 30, 2017. Classroom implementation will be for school year 2011-2012.

The instructional materials on the lists were extensively reviewed, evaluated and recommended by state selection committees composed of grade/subject area teachers and administrators in the English Language Arts curriculum area from across the state.
The main criterion for review was correlation of the materials to the state curriculum frameworks and the Common Core State Standards for English Language Arts.

The adoption process now moves from the state to local districts.  Districts now should form local selection committees consisting of certified personnel, primarily classroom teachers.

Samples of the state-adopted materials may be requested from representatives of the specific publishers. Contact information for the publishers and details for receiving and returning samples can be found on the Educators Book Depository web site at
http://www.educatorsbook.com/. After adoptions are made, samples must be returned to the Educators Book Depository. School systems may keep the samples of the textbooks or other materials if adopted and purchased.

Attached are schedules for the textbook caravans for English Language Arts, grades K-12.  Please attend the location that is most convenient.  Caravans are sponsored by the Arkansas Textbook Publishers Association and are endorsed by the ADE.  Questions regarding the caravans should be directed to Kim Herring at (501) 517-5342, to the Educators Book Depository at (501) 490-0007 or to the Arkansas Textbook Publishers Web site at www.arktpa.com.

Pursuant to Ark. Code Ann. §  6-21-405 (c), school districts shall certify to the ADE by June of each year which instructional materials they wish to purchase by state contract from the state-recommended list. Forms for reporting adoptions are available at http://www.arkansased.org/educators/instructional.html. The deadline for filing reports of adoptions is April 1.

The textbook depository is stocked based on the reports of local adoptions received. Timely reporting of adoptions will provide the necessary lead-time for stocking the textbook depository and will enable the depository to avoid delays and backorders in shipping textbook orders for the 2011-2012 school year. The depository will fill orders first from districts that have reports of adoptions on file, so please file reports of local adoptions as soon as possible, but no later than April 1.

Please fax or mail adoption reports to the following:
